DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival
in Lima, reception and transfer to your Hotel.
Day 2: CITY TOUR OF
LIMA
After breakfast, we will pick you up from your hotel for
a city tour of colonial and modern Lima, including the cathedral,
dating from 1654, the main square, which still houses the
original bronze fountain built in 1650, and the San Francisco
Convent and its catacombs. Lima was founded in 1535 by Pizarro
and rebuilt in 1991, the same year that UNESCO declared
it a world heritage site. Lima was home to the Spanish viceroy
during the time of the Spanish colonialists. The tour also
includes a visit to the residential areas of San Isidro
and Miraflores, stopping at Larco Mar to enjoy a view of
the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Return to your hotel. In the
evening, we will pick you up from your Hotel for the overnight
bus to Huaraz.
Day 3: Huaraz
Upon arrival in Huaraz, we will transfer you to your Hotel
for a free day to become accustomed to the altitude of 3100m.
Day 4: HUARAZ-LAKE
LLANGUNUCO
After breakfast, we begin the tour with a trip to Lake Llanganuco
in the north of the Callejon de Huaylas with a stop in Carhuaz
and the tragic aftermath of old Yungay. Llanganuco is a
beautiful, crystal clear lake, in the Cordillera Blanca
region of the Huascaran National Park. There are awesome
views of the Cordillera, the highest tropical mountain range
in the world. In the afternoon, we will return to Huaraz
and your hotel.
Day 5: HUARAZ-CHAVIN
de HUANTAR
After breakfast, we take a trip to Chavin de Huantar, site
of the oldest pan-Andean civilization, dating back to 2000BC.
Located on the outskirts of the village of the same name,
a tour of the ruins is followed by lunch. The site has many
galleries and subterranean tunnels and houses many carved
stone figures of anthropomorphic semblances reminiscent
of the Maya culture. The most remarkable piece of carving
is "El Lanzon", a granite carving 4.5 meters in
height. Its head is built into the roof of the gallery and
its base into the floor, making it immovable. An anthropomorphic
figure with feline teeth, it is thought to indicate an important
ceremonial, religious artifact. Return to Huaraz where the
journey takes you over the continental divide at the high
Kawish pass.Spend the night in your Hotel.
Day 6: HUARAZ-HUASCARAN
NATIONAL PARK
in the early morning, we will head to the Pastoruri Glacier,
passing through the towns of Recuay and Catac. Once heading
into the National Park, you will see the Puya Raymondi,
the remarkable exotic plant that belongs to the pineapple
family, and takes 29 years to grow. With thousands of flowers,
it towers over 12m in height and is the tallest flowering
plant in the world. Along the way, you will also see prehistoric
wall paintings, and natural carbonated mineral springs.
Once at the foot of the glacier, the trail will take about
an hour to walk. Return to Huaraz and, after dinner, an
overnight bus ride to Cajamarca.
Day 7: CAJAMARCA-CUMBEMAYO
Upon arrival in Cajamarca, we will proceed with an early
check in to your Hotel and begin our tour of Cumbemayo,
some 20 km outside of the town and the site of ancient,
pre-inca channels engraved into the mountainside. The ducts
were built by the old Cajamarca culture. Return to Cajamarca.
Day 8: CAJAMARCA
Today is a free day to enjoy the town, famous for in 1532,
Pizarro imprisoned and subsequently executed Inca Atahualpa,
bringing to an end the Inca Nation. A chance to visit the
thermal baths at Baños del Inca. Optional visit to the pre-inca
graveyards of Otuzco, carved into the hillside and dating
back to over 1000BC. This is also a great opportunity to
purchase 18k gold at a great price. In the Evening we will
transfer you to the bus for your overnight ride to Trujillo.
Day 9: TRUJILLO-CHAN
CHAN
Upon arrival in Trujillo, we will proceed with an early
check in to your hotel a then begin a guided visit to the
metropolis of Chan-Chan, the ancient capital city of the
Chimu Empire. It is the largest pre-Columbian city in South
America, built entirely of mud and adobe brick. A stop is
made at Huaca Dragon to visit this restored, pyramidal shaped
adobe temple consecrated to the rainbow, and with beautiful
bas-reliefs. Our last stop will be to a small archaeological
museum before returning to your Hotel.
Day 10: CHICLAYO-SIPAN
Early morning transfer to your hotel in Chiclayo. Excursion
to the Sipan Huaca Rajada, two adobe pyramids separated
by a huge square and belonging to the Sipan culture, followed
by a visit to Sipan museum. The discovery of Sipan was the
most important twentieth century archaeological find in
Peru. The tombs were intact with many artifacts of silver,
gold and copper. The Lord of Sipan was dated to 350AD. Return
to your Hotel.
Day 11: CHICLAYO-TUCUME-BRUNING
MUSEUM-LIMA
After breakfast, a visit to the Tucume complex, home to
over 26 pyramids. The day concludes with a visit to the
Bruning museum, perhaps the best museum in South America.
Transfer to the airport for your return flight back to Lima.Spend
the night in your Hotel.
Day 13: CARAL
Transfer from your hotel for a full day's guided visit to
Caral, the oldest civilization in the Americas. Dating back
to over 3000BC, this earliest of settlements developed almost
simultaneously with the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt,
India and China. There was also a Quipa found at this site
which gives Peru possible the second oldest known form of
communication in the world. In the evening, we will transfer
you back to your Hotel in Lima.
Day 14: PISCO
After breakfast, we will transfer you to the bus station
for your first class bus to Pisco. Reception and transfer
to your Hotel.
Day 15: PISCO-PARACAS-NAZCA
After breakfast, transfer to the port for the boat to the
Ballestas islands. Commonly referred to as the "little
Galapagos", here you will see a massive concentration
of sea birds and sea lions in their natural habitat. After
the boat tour, we will return to the mainland for an trip
to the Paracas National Reserve, the only coastal reserve
in Peru. Here you will visit several museums showing the
natural history of Paracas and also the ancient Paracas
culture in addition to the beautiful "cathedral",
a natural rock formation. After lunch, return to Pisco.
In the afternoon, we will transfer you to the bus terminal
for the 3 hour first class bus ride to Nazca. Arrival and
transfer to your Hotel.
Second part
Day 16: NAZCA-LIMA
Before breakfast, a flight tour over the enigmatic Nazca
Lines; gigantic drawings and geometrical figures engraved
in the driest desert of Peru and dating back to 250 AD.
Drawn throughout over 1000 Km of desert on the Pampas of
San Jose in Ica, and due to their enormous size and largely
unknown origin, leaves an impression on all who visit this
mysterious archaeological site. With representations of
animals, such as a spider, a monkey and several birds, they
are believed to be an enormous astronomical calendar or
possibly an offering to the gods. First discovered in 1550
it was not until the advent of flight, in the 1920's, that
the lines were first realized for their significance. After
breakfast, a private tour of the ancient Cantalloc aqueducts
and the ruins of a recently discovered Inca town nearby.
Transfer to the bus station for the first class bus back
to Lima. Transfer to your Hotel.
Day 17: LIMA-AREQUIPA
After breakfast, we will transfer you to the airport for
your flight to Arequipa. Considered the most beautiful city
in Peru, Arequipa is dominated in the distance by the huge
Misti volcano. In the afternoon, you will embark on a city
tour visiting the Chilina valley and the old San Lazaro
district. You will also have a general view of the city
from the Yanahuara Belvedere, the Plaza de Armas and its
Cathedral, the cloisters of La Compañia Church, the Church
and Square of San Francisco and the colonial Santa Catalina
convent which is built from volcanic lava and dates from
the 16th century.Transfer to your Hotel.
Day 18: AREQUIPA-COLCA
CANYON-COLCA LODGE
After breakfast, we leave Arequipa, passing near the thermal
baths of Yura and climbing up towards the National Reserve
of Pampa de Cañahuas (3,800m), where groups of Alpacas,
Vicunas, and guanacos can be seen. After a few hours, the
descent to the Colca Valley starts until we arrive at Chivay,
the most important town of the valley. After lunch, we continue
on to the Colca Lodge, set in the Colca Valley itself. With
its very own hot springs, relax in the beautiful environment
of the Canyon.colca lodge.
Day 19: COLCA LODGE-CRUZ
del CONDOR-AREQUIPA
Early breakfast at the hotel. Then an early departure to
Cruz del Condor viewpoint, a few kilometers before Cabanaconde,
where the Colca Canyon starts. Here you view flight of the
condors as well as of the depth of the canyon. In the afternoon
return to Arequipa and to your Hotel.
Day 20: AREQUIPA-JULIACA-PUNO
After breakfast, we will transfer you to the airport for
your flight to Juliaca. We will then transfer you to Puno
and your Hotel. It is important to note that Lake Titicaca
is the mythical birth place of the Inca Empire.
Day 21: PUNO-LAKE
TITICACA
Early transfer to the port for the boat journey on Lake
Titicaca to the floating islands of Uros. Made entirely
of reeds and inhabited by the Aymara Uros people. They live
in huts built on platforms of reeds, not more than 1 foot
thick. Short walk on the islands, then the boat trip continues
as far as the island of Taquile. Members of this self supporting
Aymara community receive visitors in their colourful national
costume and show them around the island. Taquile is renowned
for its fine, decorative weavings. A boxed lunch is included.Spend
the night in Puno.
Day 22: PUNO-JULIACA-CUSCO
After breakfast. Transfer to Juliaca airport for the flight
to Cusco. Along the way, an excursion will be made to the
pre-inca Sillustani funeral towers next to the Umayo lake.
The towers form part of one of the largest and most important
necropolis in the world. Used by both the Altiplano civilization
and the Incas and their wives "Collas" to honor
their dead and in preparation for the after-life. It was
abandoned when the first Spanish arrived. With over ninety
Chulpas (tombs), all built from volcanic rock, those for
the Incas can be easily recognized by their finer detail.
Reception and transfer to your Hotel.
Day 23: CUSCO
Afternoon guided city tour of the four ruins nearby; the
Sacsayhuaman Fortress overlooking the city of Cuzco, a pre
Inca architectural masterpiece; Kenko, a rock sanctuary
whose main attraction is the monolithic altar representing
a puma, the red Fortress of Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay,
a beautiful fountain fed by a spring forming a series of
basins continue to the city of Cuzco; the Main Square, the
Cathedral and the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun.Spend
the night in your Hotel.
Day 24: SACRED VALLEY
TOUR
After breakfast, we will pick you up for a full day tour
of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the village of
Pisac, founded during colonial times and set at the foot
of a hill crowned by the remains of an Inca city. On Sundays,
Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the main square, Indians barter
their products and artisans from all over the area sell
their woven alpaca wool blankets and ponchos, engraved gourds,
antique reproductions, jewelry, etc. On Sundays it is also
the meeting place for mayors from all the villages in the
region, dressed in their traditional costumes to attend
morning mass. After lunch, we will visit Ollantaytambo,
the only Inca town which was not overthrown by the conquistadores,
and explore the ruins which tower above it.Spend the night
in your Hotel.
Day 25: MACHU PICCHU
Transfer to the train station for the early morning departure
to Aguas Calientes and then a bus ride up to the timeless
ruins of Machu Picchu ruins. Upon arrival to the ruins,
you will be given a guided visit of Machu Picchu for about
2 hours. There are many theories as to the origins of Machu
Picchu but three of the most popular ideas include a temple
to the sun, a fortress against the jungle inhabitants or
a sanctuary for the Incas. This beautiful city has houses,
temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected
by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces
cut into the mountain side which were used for agriculture.
After the tour, free time to enjoy this magical and spiritual
wonder. After the tour, you will have a few hours to explore
at your own pace before taking the afternoon bus back down
to Aguas Calientes and your Hotel.
Day 26: AGUAS CALIENTES-
OLLANTAYTAMBO-CUSCO
Free day in Aguas Calientes to return to Machu Picchu, relax
in the hot springs, or take the short hike to the private
waterfall reserve of Mandor Pampa. Afternoon train to Ollantaytambo
town and transfer to your Hotel.
Day 27: CUSCO-PUERTO
MALDONADO-ECO AMAZONIA LODGE-MONKEY ISLAND
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Puerto Maldonado.
Upon arrival, transfer to the boat dock where you will board
the boat for the trip down the Madre de Dios River. Along
the way, you will have the chance to observe alligators,
turtles, many species of birds, and a variety of flora and
fauna. Arriving at the lodge, you will be directed to your
comfortable bungalow, followed by a welcome drink and lunch.
After lunch, you will be accompanied by the lodges professional
guide to Monkey Island which is only 5 minutes from the
lodge. Located in the middle of the Madre de Dios River,
Monkey Island hosts a multitude of Monkey species such as
the Spider Monkey, Achuni, Squirrel Monkey, and the little
Leoncito (little lion). The trip to the island affords beautiful
sightseeing of the local landscape as well as the flora
and fauna that they host. And, to top it all off, there
is that breathtaking jungle sunset.
Day 28: COCHA PERDIDA
(LOST LAKE)
After breakfast, we set forth through the virgin jungle
led by the professional guide. Todays hike will take you
to the Cocha Perdida. This site effectively constitutes
a unique protected Ecosystem, refuge, and Feeding ground
for the great diversity of wildlife including the Otter,
Turtles, Alligators, Tapir, and Jaguar. There are also many
birds with striking plumage as well as an ample variety
of species of fish.
This area is and distinctly particular to EcoAmazonia Reserve,
by virtue of having remained altogether unaltered, and conveniently
surrounded by lard swamps and wetlands. One of the highlights
of today’s tour is certainly the ascent to the Mirador built
atop the the greatest of treetops in the Amazon forest,
the revered Shihauhuaco from where a grand view of the great
and magical forest can be admired. This is complimented
by a pleasant canoe ride around the lake, after which we
return to the lodge and lunch.
In the course of the afternoon, optional visit to a local
family, the Botanical Gardens, and an eco-swimming pool
are available to the guests.
Day 29: BRIOLO &
GAMITANA RIVERS-TAMBOPATA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE-RAIN FOREST-CLOUD
FOREST
After breakfast, we set off on yet another excursion through
the magical jungle. First we navigate along the Madre de
Dios River until reaching the trailhead where our hike to
the Briolo & Gamitana Rivers begins. Both of these rivers
originate in the heart of the virgin jungle and their numerous
meanders and large winding channels form large navigable
waterways.
We return aboard a canoe, closely observing along the way
an abundance of wildlife plus flora and fauna. Returning
to the lodge, we will have dinner and then spend a last
quite evening in the jungle.
Day 30: PUERTO MALDONADO-CUSCO
Breakfast and then transfer to the airport for your return
flight to Cusco and transfer to your Hotel.
Day 31: Transfer
to the airport for your return flight to Lima and then home.
